Crisis negotiation is one of law enforcement's most effective tools. The successful resolution of tens of thousands of cases throughout the world repeatedly has demonstrated its value. Developed over 25 years ago, the concept has helped save the lives of countless law enforcement officers, hostages, and suicidal subjects. These successful cases, as well as those that resulted in the loss of fellow officers and hostages, have shown the need for experienced and well trained members to be readably available for a rapid response to critical incidents.
The use of negotiation during times when subjects are suicidal, barricaded or have taken hostages is wildly recognized as a successful method of peacefully resolving such critical incidents. In recognizing this, the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council has trained nine (9) members as Crisis Negotiators, available for deployment throughout member communities.
The CNT is available for rapid deployment to all member communities to assist with incidents involving hostage takings, barricade situations, and suicide attempts, and are yet another option available to incident commanders during a critical situation. Members of the CNT are trained in tactics and procedures that give them an opportunity to bring a peaceful end to such difficult situations.
