Suspicious Packages

Here are some very simple reminders on how to identify and what to do if you, or someone you know, should receive a package that you feel uncomfortable with.  Remember, if you have any doubts, or feel uncomfortable in any way, notify the police department for assistance.

-Identifying A Suspicious Package-

  • No return address, or restrictive markings such as "Personal Package"
  • Postage hinting it was possibly mailed from another country; excessive postage
  • Misspelled words
  • Addressed to a title only, such as "Chief Executive"
  • Badly typed or written
  • Lopsided or uneven packaging
  • Strange odor
  • Rigid or bulky package
  • Excessive tape or string used to package
  • Oily stains, discolorations or crystallization on wrapper

-If You Receive A Suspicious Letter or Package-

  1. Handle with care - Don't shake or bump
  2. Isolate and look for indicators
  3. Don't open, smell, touch or taste
  4. Treat it as suspect - Call 911

In addition to the guidelines listed above, please be wary of suspicious objects and packages during your daily travels.  Watch for luggage, boxes or bags left unattended, and in public locations, and overall, be observant of what is going on around you.  Any suspicious activity may be reported to the police for further investigation.
